About the artist:
Damir Salidzhanovich Rozybaev was born in 1939 in Samarkand. From 1954 to 1959 he studied in the sculptural department of the Tashkent Art College. An essential role in the development of Rozybaev's talent was played by communicating with Alexander Nikolaevich Volkov, a master of Central Asian art of the twentieth century. After graduating from college, Damir Rozybaev, as one of the best students, was invited to continue his studies at the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I.E. Repin in Leningrad. He later returned to Uzbekistan and since then worked as a sculptor, and also participated in archaeological expeditions in the Surkhandarya region, and was engaged in the restoration of ancient sculpture in the laboratory of the Institute of Art Studies of the Academy of Sciences in Tashkent. For almost ten years, since 1988, he was the director of the State Museum of Art of Uzbekistan, and in 1986 opened a children's art studio in which he still teaches. His sculptures and paintings are stored in the State Museum of the East, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Museum of Art of Uzbekistan, and the State Museum of Art named after I.V. Savitsky in Nukus, and his monumental compositions are installed in Uzbekistan, Armenia, Hungary and South Korea.
In recent decades, Rozybaev has been passionate about finding expressive means for the synthesis of painting, sculpture, architecture, music. Possessing a unique "melodic" talent, Rozybaev seeks to convey the rhythms of the Eastern Melodies, expressing the deep essence of Central Asian culture, using the language of plasticity. To create his works, the artist uses limestone, marble, granite, bronze, fireclay, and at times covers these with coloured glazes, and even crystal. One of his favourite materials is coloured clay, created by himself based on oxides and heat-resistant pigments.
