On 16 May 2018 the Agreement on Cooperation was signed at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington (USA) between the Smithsonian Institution— the non-profit trust and state institution of the United States of America— and the Art & Culture Development Foundation under the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Information: the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery is one of the 19 museums of the Smithsonian Institution. The Gallery building is located on the National Mall in Washington, behind the maing Smithsonian building. Along with the Freer Gallery of Art, the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery is a collection of works of Asian art owned by the Smithsonian Institution. The collection of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery comprises about 10,000 objects.
The agreement was signed to develop and strengthen bilateral relations in the area of culture and to implement projects related to education, history, art, and other cultural activities.
Within the framework of the document, the parties agreed to to cooperate to conduct research into the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Central Asia.
The cooperation will include capacity building programmes within the discipline known as museology, joint research and publications, exhibition activities, and the exchange of available information about objects from the collections of the Smithsonian Institution and museums in Uzbekistan and its galleries.
Information: on 24 March the exhibition of Uzbek ikat “To Dye For: Ikats from Central Asia” was opened in Washington. The exhibits include rare items created in various regions throughout Uzbekistan in the 19th century.
The exhibits include a collection of old clothes made of satin and adras fabrics gathered by Guido Goldman, a researcher from Harvard University, and clothes from the American designer Oscar de la Renta.
Information: the Smithsonian Institution was established in 1846 in pursuance of the Law of the United States Congress to ‘enhance and disseminate knowledge.’ Within the institution museums, research centers and programmes aimed at understanding and preserving the cultural heritage of mankind, promoting contemporary cultural creativity, and understanding and maintaining the planet's biodiversity were launched and founded.
The Art & Culture Development Foundation under the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Uzbekistan was established in October 2017 with the purpose of providing state support, ensuring further development of national culture and arts in Uzbekistan, and expanding international and intergovernmental cultural links.
